The semi-rural and picturesque area surrounding the Town of Thurmont, Maryland is probably best known as the location of Camp David. Settled in at the base of the Catoctin Mountains and just 60 miles northwest of Baltimore and Washington, Thurmont has long been a place where people come to escape the fast pace of city life. But with a steadily growing population, Town officials have found that they can't afford a leisurely pace when it comes to accessing public records.
Last year, Town Clerk and Treasurer Richard May began looking at document management software as a way to improve access to Thurmont's records. It didn't take him long to decide that a Laserfiche® MinuteManager package from General Code was what he needed. "What I really liked about the Laserfiche software was how easy it was to use,"

says Richard. "And I knew General Code would handle all the set up and provide on-site training."
Although the Town had initially purchased the software for the sole purpose of helping Administrative Clerk Tracy Schur efficiently archive and search through years of Town minutes, additional uses for the program were quickly discovered. During the initial training session, another Town employee, Becky Long, realized that Laserfiche could also improve access to the subdivision records she maintains. Within just a few minutes, Becky and General Code Laserfiche Technician Sandy Brennan had a template designed and were ready to begin scanning in the previous year's files.
Tracy and Becky are using Laserfiche with great success to store and manage their records, and that's just the beginning. Plans are already under way to add even more users within the Town's office. "That's one of the great things about this system," says Sandy Brennan. "It comes with everything you need to get started, and when you're ready to add additional users or features, upgrading is simple. I can't wait to go back to Thurmont to see how many more uses they have found for the program!"
