Region II of the
International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) held their annual
meeting in East Rutherford, New Jersey in January, 2001. Over the course
of the 3-day conference, Clerks participated in classroom style presentations
and visited with exhibitors. General Code sponsored a trip to Ellis Island
where historical exhibits reminded everyone of the importance of preserving
our heritage.
While traveling by ferry past the Statue of Liberty and the World
Trade Center Twin Towers, members networked with peers, enjoyed
the warm, sunny January day and took pictures of the New York skyline.
Upon reaching their destination, visitors were treated to an informative
tour of the immigration center, which stores records of the twelve million
people who passed through its gates from 1892 to 1954. An exhibit detailing
the history of Ellis Island and illustrating changes in American Immigration
Policy was one of the highlights of the trip.
General Code was pleased to have participated in this special and
unique event.
Just 8 months later, our thoughts returned to this trip in a much different light as we witnessed the sight of the World Trade Center as it collapsed after the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. The photos we present here have come to mean much more to us at General Code than just an enjoyable field trip with the local government employees we serve. They have become treasured reminders of the New York City we knew then, and the people we met who worked and lived there.
Even years afterward, we still remember those who lost their lives that day, and our hearts and thoughts are with those who were left behind.
