Choosing a scanner can be confusing at times, considering the plethora of models available. So, which scanners that work with Laserfiche are easier to use and set up? (Note: Just about any scanner, except a single sheet flatbed scanner, or MDF (multifunction device) that can generate TIFF files, in conjunction with Laserfiche 7, can be used to capture images.) General Code has had success with both USB and SCSI scanners. USB, in particular, makes for an easy setup.
Scanners rated at 25 ppm (pages per minute) that scan legal sized pages (8.5 x 14) via the feeder at resolutions up to 600 dpi are good choices for smaller offices. “One pass duplex” means the paper does not have to be manually flipped to scan side two. Newer scanners also typically have smaller “footprints,” which means they won’t take up much desk space.
Midrange models scanning faster up to 40 ppm with a larger feeder capacity (holding up to 100 sheets at once) may be a wise choice for somewhat larger offices. They can also offer a letter sized (8.5 x 11) flatbed for scanning more delicate documents that might otherwise get jammed in the feeder.
A more robust scanner for larger offices is available, capable of scanning up to 12 x 18 on an oversized platen (glass) for larger, more delicate documents. A large platen is handy for documents that are legal sized
(8.5 x 14) or tabloid sized (11 x 17). At close to 60 ppm these types of scanners are extremely fast but can be somewhat expensive. Such higher end scanners can be connected via both SCSI and USB 2.0. They can also support legal sized paper (sometimes larger) via the feeder, scanning up to 600 dpi.
