More Bang = More Bucks.

Loosening of consumer fireworks bans is helping states add more boom to their bottom lines.

While only 15 states nationwide currently permit fireworks sales for consumer use, more and more states are considering lifting long-time bans—either partially or in full. The reason? More bang can mean more bucks. In fact, according to the American Pyrotechnics Association, nearly 242 million pounds of consumer fireworks were sold in the U.S. in 2016, generating nearly $755 million in revenue*. As many states face financial challenges, the potential “pop” to local coffers from fireworks-related revenue has sparked lively debate as legislators weigh the benefits of loosening restrictions on consumer sales versus public safety.
