Description

An E-Code screen is divided into three screens:

  • The left frame contains an expandable Table of Contents;
  • The right frame contains the text of the Code;
  • The bottom frame contains a search box and viewer screen tabs (Browse/Document)

Getting to the information

There are three ways to navigate an E-Code:

  • In the right frame, using the left and right arrows at the top of the frame or at the very bottom, scroll through the document page by page.
  • In the left frame, expand and collapse the Table of Contents to view links to specific portions of the Code. (see Using the Table of Contents)
  • In the bottom frame, key specific words into the search box and click on the 'Search' button. (see Searching an E-Code)

Using the Table of Contents

The Table of Contents in the left frame of the screen, expands and collapses by clicking on the + (plus) and - (minus) signs next to each title link, and can be used to navigate through the Code by clicking on a specific title.

Expand the Table of Contents by clicking on the + (plus) signs next to each title listed. Once a title has been fully expanded, a - (minus) sign will appear next to it. Titles with - (minus) signs next to them may be 'collapsed' to shorten the Table of Contents.

The Table of Contents will expand to show all parts of the Code from Division Title to Chapter title to Article title and, finally, Section title. Once you have found the portion of the Code you wish to view, click on the specific title and that text will appear in the right (document) frame of the screen.

(NOTE: Some E-Codes have Table of Contents that are lengthy and run-over to a second page. To view the rest of the Table of Contents, scroll to the bottom right portion of the left frame and click on the right arrow.)

Searching an E-Code

The search box is found in the bottom frame of the E-Code screen. Keying specific words into the search box and clicking on the Search button will help you find places in the code where those words are located.

Type specific keywords into the search box in the frame at the bottom of the screen. Click the search button. The first instance of the words you are searching on will appear in the right frame of the screen. To view the next appearance of the words searched on, click on the double right arrow button in the bottom frame of the screen (near the search box). Continuing to click on the double right arrow button will help you browse only those portions of the E-Code where the words you keyed into the search box appear.

A second option for viewing those portions of the code appropriate to your search is to expand the Table of Contents (in the left frame) looking for titles have numbers to the left of them. If a number appears next to the title, then the keywords you searched on appear within that title. The numbers indicate the frequency with which the keywords appear in those particular chapters/articles/sections.

    Using a wildcard to help your search:

    Using a wildcard symbol such as an asterisk (*) or a question mark (?) will help you find variations on word you are searching for.

    The question mark (?) character searches for one character. For example, the search wom?n would find "woman" or "women."

    The asterisk (*) character searches for multiple characters. For example, the search th*t will find "thought," "that," and anything else starting with "th" and ending with "t." The search run* will find "run" and anything that begins with run (running, runaways, runway, runoff, etc).

    Phrase Search:

    To search for a phrase (more than one word which you want to be found together), surround the phrase in quotation marks ("). For example: "longevity bonus" or "department of administration".

Printing from an E-Code

(NOTE: It is not possible to print the entire E-Code at once.)

Portions of the E-Code may be printed, page-by-page. Click the cursor in the frame of the E-Code which you wish to print. Then, either click the Print button in your browser, or choose the File drop-down menu from the top of your browser screen and choose the Print option.
